GYULA HARANGOZO

choreographer, director, dancer

Kossuth award-winning choreographer, theater director and dancer. Former Ballet Director of the Vienna State Opera, the Vienna Volksoper and Director of the Vienna State Opera Ballet School (2005-2010), Director of the Hungarian National Ballet of the Hungarian National Opera (1995-2005). Artistic Director of the Szeged Open Air Summer Festival in Hungary (2013-2021).

During his career as a performer, he danced all the major male roles in classical ballet literature, he performed in one-act plays by renowned choreographers, and gave outstanding performances in modern ballets as well. He has performed as a guest artist on almost all the major ballet stages of the world, the most prestigious places of his guest appearances: the Metropolitan in New York, the American Ballet Theater, the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, the Scala in Milan.

As a choreographer and stage designer, he participated in the organization of the Vienna Opera Ball (2006, 2007 Wiener Staatsoper) and among others in the creation of the stage versions of the ballets Don Quixote, Swan Lake, Coppelia, Zorba, Nutcracker and Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs.

He began his dance studies at the Hungarian State Ballet Institute, then continued at the Moscow Ballet Academy, where he graduated with excellent results in 1976. In the same year, he signed a contract with the Hungarian State Opera House. In 1978, he was appointed as a private dancer. From 1981 to 1991, he was the first soloist of the Vienna State Opera, and between 1981 and 1989 he was a permanent guest soloist of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.

Between 1992 and 1996, he worked as an international ballet manager, during which time he presented, among other things, the „Ballet Stars” international star gala shows in Vienna, Lausanne, Frankfurt and Cologne, as well as the Russian Ballet Stars show in Belgium and Slovakia. He is one of the founders and artistic advisors of the Duna Ballet international collaboration, and between 1993-2005 he was the founder and artistic director of the international ballet gala „World Stars at the Opera” at the Hungarian State Opera House. Between 1999-2001, he held the position of president of the Association of Hungarian Dance Artists. From 1995 to 2005, he worked as the director of the Hungarian National Ballet, then from 2005 to 2010 as the director of the ballet ensembles of the Vienna Staatsoper and the Volksoper and the ballet school of the Staatsoper. From 2013 to 2021, he was the artistic director of Szeged Open Air Summer Festival.
